Chimera development.

I'm working on a short 'one off' comic right now, and the story is based around a mythical monster. One that kiiiiinda gets the shaft when it comes to the headlines.

The Chimera!

When you think about it, it's a damn fun monster. Three heads, belching fire and flying around wreaking havoc.

I wanted to give it a lioness feel to most of it's body and still capture some malice.

Thoughts?

I'll post a link to the 'one off' ASAP! (still working on it!)

Arena death match: storyboard development

Working on my portfolio, I'm trying to squeeze in as much 'fun stuff' (often called nerd stuff) into it as possible.
While brushing off the cobwebs of the ol' storyboarding, I started working on a short story & battle between two gladiators. Far from the glory of ancient Rome, these two warriors are in a desolate world and fight for their lives.

In this corner, the Knight! (and squire on the right).
I wanted the Knight to look not only valiant, but have a durable feel to him. Someone who could take beating and get right back up and give as good as he got.

In this corner, the Orc!

Savage and bloodthirsty, the orc is the juxtaposition of the knight. Where as the knight stands firm with his shield and sword, the orc charges recklessly into the fray and just smashes thing till he's in a right proper frenzy.

In fantasy, orcs usually have very little armor. I wanted this orc to have a gladiatorial feel to him, like a murmillo. I was trying to convey a sort of protection in his off arm while showing some savagery in the design. No way this bad boy would have the skill to work / forge metal, so tusks and leather. Lots of tusks and big pointy things.

I'm still up in the air about his weapon. On one hand, a huge two handed axe is a great feel, on the other hand, two axes make for a crazy amount of attacks raining down.
what are your thoughts? Which would fit the situation better?

Here's the arena where they'll fight.

Now, to plot the fight.

Doors.

Recently when designing/ drawing a citadel, I came across a small obstacle.
The doors.

Now, the citadel was in a state of ruin and mostly destroyed, so I could have just done some smashed tinder and debris. To me the details and style of a structure or it's architecture can help set a mood. Generic 'castle doors' wouldn't do for me, so I set out to design doors that fit the structure, which was sinister and cruel in nature....well, I'm hoping it looks that way.

There are three doors. Each a different 'layer' of the citadel. The further out ones (outer doors) are more protective and less ornamental. The further in, more decorative, and less of a real gate.

First door. Outer door. Meant to be protective and formidable.

Secondary door. Inner Gate door. More decorative, but still sturdy.

Fantasy 'mood' doodles.

I've been warming up to setting a tone for a fantasy world through some fun doodles and just having a go at things.
Recently, I organized a 'campaign' for some friends and here are some quick drawings with water-colors. For the most part, they're monochromatic to make them stand out a bit.

This one was to show the long and arduous road ahead of the 'generals'.

This was just a filler to tell people more about the 'battles'.

Last but not least, the end of the Journey ended at a Ziggurat of iron and flame.
All in all, just some quick 'mood pieces' for the story line. Interesting lesson on how a bit of water colors can liven up a doodle.

First!

Ahoy all.

I'd like to welcome you to a bunch of development doodles and sketches. I'm working on a project that I can't say much about right now, but I can share aspects of the world.

More importantly, it's a good medium to show and share the progress of each aspect of this world. I'll be showcasing development sketches of characters, designs, monsters and Baal-knows-what.
Your feedback is welcomed and I'll be happy to answer any and all questions.
